What It Means Being In A Fandom

By B.K. (Kodbro)

There are two different types of people. Those who are interested in fandoms and those who aren’t. To those who are, we know what it means to be in one. But how do you explain that to someone who doesn’t?

Becoming part of a fandom is like becoming a part of a family. One who doesn’t judge you. One you can cry with and laugh with. The characters of that show, movie or book become a part of you. If you find yourself obsessing over a fandom, embrace it. It is also a way of connecting with other fans all over the world.

We are all nerds. And we are all fans of something. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

The real reason we do this is to escape from reality. Cause let’s admit it, reality is a bummer. When it hits you hard in the face, you just want to hide away from the rest of the world which we do by getting engrossed in our fandoms.

Now I know what that may seem like to some. But with the technology we have nowadays constantly growing and developing, it just becomes another form of entertainment. It’s a way of making us feel belonged in the world. And in return, us fans can contribute our appreciation for them by creating fanart, fanvids and fanfics.

It is a way of creating theories, originally known as Fanons, that fans come up with on something that happens in their fandom which hasn’t happened yet and may possibly still occur.

Being part of a fandom means you’re not alone. You could be yearning for something more than just your ordinary life if you find yourself in one. I know I do. It can open up doors to endless possibilities of what the world could or not be like. And when we lose a character that has become dear to us, it is like losing a part of ourselves. This happens of how you related to the character or sometimes they are just so inspiring that it changes the way you think.

It can change who you are. For good or for bad. That’s what it means.
